We’ve been honored to work with The Sylvia Center on their Healthy Food for All programs in Hudson. From December 2016 through April 2017. Valley Variety hosted three 6-week sessions of their Family Class.
The Family Classes bring kids and their parents to work together preparing healthy meals and learning cooking skills and techniques to use at home. The sessions are free and each week the families make a meal to eat as a group and each leave with a bag of fresh vegetables. The recipes demonstrate how to use seasonal vegetables as well as to make freshly made sauces. And over the six weeks, the kids learn about kitchen safety and gain confidence with their preparation skills, Plus, the rule that everyone needs to at least try everything that is prepared. For the parents, it’s a way to expose their kids to cooking in a fun setting and they also get to pick up some useful new skills and recipes.
It was always a part of the plan to share the space with the community so we welcomed the chance to host The Sylvia Center’s Family Classes.
The home of the The Sylvia Center is at Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook. Their mission is to inspire young people to become healthy eaters and advocates for healthy food in their families and communities. The Healthy Food for All program is one way they strive to build awareness and a lasting connection to local food sources. Click here to find out more about The Sylvia Center’s programs.
