On Saturday, September 20th, 1st prize pie winner and cookbook author, Allison Kave, led a pie making class. During this hands-on class, everyone made a pie from scratch. Allison shared her techniques and tips as she walked through the steps of making the dough, prepping the filling, rolling the dough and assembling the pie. There was a choice of  two fillings—Shaker Lemon and Honey Pear. Throughout the class, pies were baking in the oven and were ready for tasting before the end of class. Each person left with a pie ready to be baked at home, plus dough for a second pie. Both could be frozen.

ABOUT ALLISON
Allison Kave has been baking for as long as she can remember. In 2009, she entered her Bourbon Ginger Pecan pie in the Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off — and won! That experience inspired her to finally take the plunge into the culinary world. Soon after, Allison opened the made-to-order First Prize Pies pie shop on the Lower East Side. In 2012, she and her partner opened Butter & Scotch — a dessert and cocktail business based in Brooklyn. Her first cookbook, First Prize Pies, was published in March 2014 and features 85 recipes that will have you racing to the kitchen to whip up your own homemade pies.

Allison has taught pie making at the French Culinary Institute and the James Beard Institute.
